The Beverly Public Library regrets to announce the passing of long-time library trustee Neil B. Olson. Neil was the Director of Libraries of Salem State College for 30 years, and a Trustee of Beverly Public library for 40 years. A graduate of Simmons College and Tufts University, he was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marines, serving in both World War II and Korea. In the 1950s, he was a member of the John Holmes poetry workshop in Cambridge, MA. Neil’s acquaintances included poets Maxine Kumin and Donald Hall, and he published several chapbooks of poetry over his life, including “Death of a War Dog,” the title poem of which appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. Neil will be greatly missed by the library and the community.
Neil’s funeral service will be held in the Sohier Room at the Beverly Public Library, 32 Essex Street, Beverly, MA on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA.
