Artist Statement: In early January I started a series of portraits of loved ones, beginning with my nephew, who was far away in boot camp, training to become a Marine. I wanted to capture his beauty and vitality at eighteen. Could I capture his openness? His tenderness? It took twenty hours and four tries to finally achieve satisfying results.
Since then, I have created over forty portraits of friends, family and community members, using photographs as inspiration, and incorporating natural light, patterns and textures, big goofy grins, surprising colors, and twinkly eyes. I work more quickly now, with plenty of acrylic paint, bigger brushes, faster marks, and have come to realize some important qualities that I admire in successful portraits.
